Escritores y medios de comunicación de dudosa reputación, que a menudo se jactan de practicar un periodismo independiente con opiniones supuestamente de izquierdas, difunden una propaganda corrosiva y una desinformación que pretende despojar al pueblo sirio de toda capacidad de acción política
Desde el comienzo del levantamiento sirio, hace diez años, y especialmente desde que Rusia intervino en Siria a favor de Bashar al-Asad, se ha producido un fenómeno curioso y perverso:la adhesión al régimen de Asad en nombre del antiimperialismo por parte de gente que, por lo general, se considera progresista o de "izquierda", y la consiguiente desinformación manipuladora que no hace más que desviar la atención de los abusos bien documentados de Asad y sus aliados. Pretendiendo "oponerse" al imperialismo, suele destacar selectivamente asuntos relacionados con la "intervención" y con violaciones de los derechos humanos, alineándose a menudo con los gobiernos deRusia y China; quienes no están de acuerdo con sus puntos de vista estrictamente controlados son tachados frecuentemente (y falsamente) de "entusiastas del cambio de régimen" o de sujetos embaucados por los intereses políticos occidentales.
El papel divisor y sectario que desempeña este grupo es inconfundible: según su visión simplista, todos los movimientos que propugnan la democracia y la dignidad y van en contra de los intereses estatales rusos o chinos se presentan como obra de la injerencia occidental: ninguno es autóctono, ninguno de ellos se corresponde con décadas de lucha nacional independiente contra la brutal dictadura (como en Siria), y ninguno representa realmente los deseos de la gente que exige el derecho a una vida digna en lugar de la opresión y los abusos. Lo que les une es la negativa a enfrentarse a los crímenes del régimen de Asad, o siquiera a reconocer que se produjo un levantamiento popular contra Asad que fue brutalmente reprimido.
Estos escritores y medios de comunicación han proliferado en los últimos años, y a menudo han colocado a Siria en la primera línea de la oposición al imperialismo y al intervencionismo, que típicamente restringen a Occidente; suelen pasar por alto la intromisión rusa e iraní. Con ello, tratan de alinearse con una larga y venerable tradición de oposición interna a los abusos del poder imperial en el extranjero, que no solo, pero muy a menudo, ha provenido de la izquierda.
Pero no forman parte legítimamente de esta comitiva.Como tampoco lo hace nadie que se alinee explícita o implícitamente con el perverso gobierno de Asad,ni nadie que propale de forma selectiva y oportunista acusaciones de "imperialismo" en virtud de su versión particular de la política de "izquierda", en lugar de combatirlo de manera coherente y por principio en todo el mundo, reconociendo por tanto el intervencionismo imperialista de Rusia, Irán y China.
A menudo, bajo la apariencia de practicar un "periodismo independiente", estos variopintos escritores y medios de comunicación han funcionado como principales fuentes de desinformación y propaganda sobre el desastre global en el que se ha convertido Siria. Su realpolitik reaccionaria y vuelta del revés está tan obsesionada con la "política de poder", antidemocrática y de arriba abajo, como la de Henry Kissinger o Samuel Huntington, solo que con los términos invertidos. Pero esta jugada retórica enloquecedoramente simplificadora ("dar la vuelta al guión", como dijo uno de ellos en una ocasión), por muy atractivo que pueda resultar para quienes están ansiosos por identificar quiénes son los "buenos" y los "malos" en cualquier lugar del planeta, es en realidad un instrumento de adulación a la medida de sus audiencias sobre el "verdadero funcionamiento del poder", que sirve para consolidar un statu quo disfuncional e impedir el desarrollo de un enfoque verdaderamente progresista e internacional de la política mundial, que tanto necesitamos, dado el reto planetario de responder al calentamiento global.
Las pruebas de que el poder de Estados Unidos ha sido en sí mismo terriblemente destructivo, especialmente durante la Guerra Fría, son abrumadoras: en todo el mundo, desde Vietnam hasta Indonesia, pasando por Irán, Congo, América del Sur y Central y más allá, el historial de abusos masivos de los derechos humanos acumulados en nombre de la lucha contra el comunismo es evidente. Y después de la Guerra Fría, durante la llamada "guerra contra el terrorismo", las intervenciones estadounidenses en Afganistán e Irak no indican para nada que haya un cambio de orientación en el país.
Pero Estados Unidos no es el principal causante de lo que ha sucedido en Siria, a pesar de lo que afirma esta gente. La idea de que de alguna manera lo es, a pesar de todas las pruebas en contra, es un subproducto de una cultura política provinciana que insiste tanto en la centralidad del poder de Estados Unidos a escala mundial como en el derecho imperialista a identificar quiénes son los "buenos" y los "malos" en cualquier contexto.
La alineación ideológica de los admiradores derechistas de Asad con este tipo de "izquierdismo" favorable al autoritarismo es sintomática al respecto, e indica que el problema muy real y muy grave radica en otra parte: ¿qué hacer cuando un pueblo es tan maltratado por su gobierno como lo ha sido el pueblo sirio, cautivo de quienes no dudan en torturar, hacer desaparecer y asesinar a personas por el más leve indicio de oposición política a su autoridad? A medida que muchos países se acercan cada vez más al autoritarismo y se alejan de la democracia, esto nos parece una cuestión política sumamente urgente para la que todavía no hay respuesta; y porque no hay respuesta, en todo el mundo hay una creciente impunidad por parte de los poderosos, y una creciente vulnerabilidad de quienes no tienen poder.
Sobre esto, estos "antiimperialistas" no tienen nada provechoso que decir. ¿Sobre la profunda violencia política ejercida sobre el pueblo sirio por los Asad, los iraníes y los rusos? Niuna palabra. Sintiéndolo mucho, hemos de señalar que este eclipsado de las vidas y experiencias sirias encarna la esencia misma del privilegio imperialista (y racista). Estos escritores y blogueros no han demostrado estar preocupados por los sirios y sirias, inclusive los firmantes de esta carta, que han arriesgado sus vidas oponiéndose al régimen, que han sido encarcelados en las prisiones de tortura de los Asad (algunos durante muchos años), que han perdido a sus seres queridos, que han tenido amigos y familiares desaparecidos por la fuerza, que han huido de su país, y ello a pesar de que muchas personas sirias han estado escribiendo y hablando de estas experiencias durante muchos años.
En conjunto, las experiencias sirias desde la Revolución hasta el presente suponen un reto fundamental para el mundo tal y como lo ven estas personas.Los sirios que se opusieron directamente al régimen de Asad, a menudo pagando un precio muy alto, no lo hicieron al amparo de un complot imperialista occidental, sino porque las décadas de abusos, brutalidad y corrupción les resultaban y les siguen resultando intolerables. Insistir en lo contrario, y apoyar a Asad, es tratar de despojar al pueblo sirio de toda capacidad de acción política y respaldar la prolongada política de politicidio interno de los Asad, que ha privado a los sirios de cualquier posibilidad de influir significativamente en su gobierno y sus políticas.
Nosotros, sirios y partidarios de la lucha del pueblo sirio por la democracia y los derechos humanos, consideramos que estos intentos de hacer "desaparecer" a los sirios del mundo de la política, de la acción solidaria y del asociacionismo, son bastante coherentes con la naturaleza de los regímenes que esta gente admira tan abiertamente. Este es el "antiimperialismo" y el "izquierdismo" de los oportunistas, los perezosos y los tontos, y solo refuerza el bloqueo internacional disfuncional exhibido en el Consejo de Seguridad de la ONU. Esperamos que los lectores de este artículo se unan a nosotros para oponerse a ellos.
